Iran has launched missile and drone attacks against Kuwait and Bahrain in response to recent US strikes on Iranian targets, increasing fears of a wider escalation in the Gulf region.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted the US Ali Al Salem airbase in Kuwait and the US Fifth Fleet facilities at Port Salman in Bahrain with ballistic missiles and drones.
Kuwait and Bahrain condemned the attacks, describing them as violations of their sovereignty and threats to regional security.
The strikes followed US military operations against Iranian locations near the Strait of Hormuz, including areas around Sirik, Bandar-e Lengeh, and Qeshm Island. Washington said the action was a response to Iranian drone attacks on commercial vessels near the strategic waterway.
Several Gulf countries, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Oman, called for restraint and warned that further escalation could destabilize the region.
The conflict has placed a fragile US-Iran ceasefire agreement under pressure. The agreement, signed earlier in June, included commitments to keep commercial shipping routes open through the Strait of Hormuz — a major global oil transit route.
Iranian officials said the strait remains under Iranian oversight and warned that further attacks could delay the reopening of the waterway.
Analysts say neither side may want a wider war, but mistakes or civilian casualties could quickly push the crisis beyond control.
