Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Tehran is prepared to facilitate smoother transit for Japanese-linked vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, following a phone conversation with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
According to Iranian state media, Pezeshkian said Iran is willing to allow more ships associated with Japan to pass through the strategically important waterway in the Persian Gulf, while blaming US sanctions for continued disruptions to maritime trade in the region.
The Iranian president stated that Tehran is working toward easing restrictions on shipping routes, adding that a new maritime vetting system has been introduced to regulate transit through the strait.
He also emphasized that Iran hopes broader diplomatic arrangements could eventually lead to the removal of sanctions, which it says are the main obstacle to normal trade flows.
During the call, Pezeshkian reportedly urged Japan to help unlock Iranian financial assets frozen abroad due to sanctions, saying the funds could be used for essential imports such as medicine and medical equipment.
For her part, Takaichi stressed the importance of diplomacy and dialogue in reducing regional tensions. She also noted ongoing consultations with the United States regarding security in the Persian Gulf and expressed hope that all commercial vessels would be able to transit safely through the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes, and Iran has significant influence over traffic passing through it. Despite tensions with Western governments, Tehran has maintained limited cooperation with some countries to ensure continued maritime flow.
The discussions come amid broader efforts to manage regional security concerns and economic pressures linked to sanctions on Iran’s economy.
