India has formally summoned a senior United States diplomat and lodged a strong diplomatic protest following an attack on a commercial tanker off the coast of Oman that left three Indian crew members missing.
According to India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), a demarche was delivered to US Chargé d’Affaires Jason Meeks during a meeting at the ministry's headquarters in New Delhi on Wednesday. The protest came after a strike on the Palau-flagged tanker Settebello, which was carrying 24 Indian crew members at the time of the incident.
Indian authorities said 21 crew members have been rescued, while search efforts continue for the remaining three sailors who are still unaccounted for.
The MEA stated that India's embassy in Oman is closely monitoring developments and is coordinating with Omani authorities involved in ongoing search and rescue operations.
India Condemns Attack on Commercial Shipping
In one of its strongest responses to recent regional tensions, New Delhi condemned the attack and expressed concern about growing threats to maritime security in the Gulf region.
"The continuing incidents of attacks on shipping in the region are deeply worrisome and a direct result of the ongoing conflict," the ministry said in a statement.
India called for an immediate reduction in tensions and urged all parties to pursue diplomatic solutions to restore peace and stability in the region.
The ministry also emphasized the importance of protecting civilian maritime traffic, stating that attacks on commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure must cease. It further stressed that freedom of navigation and international commerce through key waterways should be restored in accordance with international law.
Rising Tensions in the Gulf
The incident comes amid escalating conflict and heightened security concerns across the Persian Gulf region. Maritime routes have faced increasing disruptions in recent months as regional tensions have intensified.
Shipping companies and governments have raised concerns over the safety of commercial vessels operating in strategic waterways, particularly around the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil transit routes.
The attack on the Settebello is expected to add further pressure on diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing a broader regional confrontation.
