The 36 state governors under the platform of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) have renewed their support for the establishment of state police in Nigeria.
The governors said the proposed state police system must be properly backed by the Constitution and should align with the principles of federalism and the rights of citizens.
Speaking after their second meeting in Abuja, the NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, said the governors received presentations from the forum’s secretariat and state Attorneys-General on efforts to create state police.
The governors agreed to continue consultations on proposed constitutional amendments and legal frameworks needed for the initiative.
They said the framework for state police should include proper governance structures, funding arrangements, recruitment standards, digital systems, and effective oversight mechanisms.
The governors also reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing reforms in the power sector, saying they would support measures aimed at expanding access to reliable and affordable electricity across Nigeria.
They reviewed the National Solar Super-Grid Initiative, which seeks to improve electricity supply through large-scale solar power generation connected to a national transmission network.
The governors noted that the initiative could support industrial growth, improve energy security, strengthen state electricity markets, and boost economic development.
They also expressed support for the National Nutrition 774 Initiative, aimed at improving nutrition and reducing child malnutrition in the country.
The forum further discussed agricultural development, food security, health, education, water supply, sanitation, and social protection programmes in collaboration with the Federal Government, World Bank, and other partners.
