The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) says it prevented planned attacks targeting a UFC event held at the White House and that several people have been taken into custody.
FBI Director Kash Patel said authorities discovered the alleged threat on June 10, days before the mixed martial arts event on the White House South Lawn, which was organised to celebrate US President Donald Trump’s birthday and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
“Thanks to the rapid action of the FBI, our partners, and the Department of Justice, multiple individuals are now in custody and the planned attacks were stopped,” Patel said.
Reports said the alleged plot involved 23 people and included plans to use explosive-carrying drones against locations near the event. Authorities have not released full details of the investigation.
Five suspects were reportedly arrested in states including Ohio, Missouri, and California, according to officials familiar with the case.
US Secret Service Director Sean Curran said the agency worked to identify those responsible and ensure they were held accountable.
Vice President JD Vance said the alleged operation suggested a high level of coordination and planning.
“An incident of this scale would require serious funding and organisation,” Vance said, describing it as an alleged coordinated terror plot.
President Donald Trump, speaking at the Group of Seven summit in France, said he was not aware of the reported planned attack.
