Families Return to Devastated Southern Lebanon as Fragile Ceasefire Holds

Displaced families have begun returning to their towns and villages after a fragile ceasefire announcement, only to find widespread destruction from months of fighting.

Homes, shops and public buildings have been heavily damaged by cross-border attacks and air raids, leaving many areas almost unrecognisable. Residents returning from shelters and safer locations are finding collapsed buildings, damaged vehicles, and homes stripped of doors, windows and basic belongings.

Some families are returning briefly to collect important documents, clothes and valuables before leaving again, while others with no alternative are trying to rebuild their lives among the ruins.

The ceasefire follows an initial agreement involving the United States and Iran, but uncertainty remains over security conditions and whether the truce will last.

Lebanese officials say Israeli attacks have killed thousands of people and displaced large numbers of residents since the escalation began. Humanitarian needs remain severe, with many communities still facing shortages of essential services.

Residents say they are hoping for stability, even as they face the difficult task of rebuilding their homes and communities.
