China has taken a major step in brain-computer interface (BCI) technology with the launch of NEO, the world's first commercially approved brain chip. Developed by researchers at Tsinghua University and Chinese neurotechnology company NeuroXess, the coin-sized implant has successfully passed clinical testing and is currently being evaluated in 11 patients.
The NEO device is designed to help people with paralysis and spinal cord injuries regain control of certain bodily functions by translating brain signals into digital commands. Researchers say the technology could also eventually assist patients with conditions such as Parkinson's disease, Epilepsy, stroke, and depression.
The development places China ahead of Neuralink, the brain-chip company founded by Elon Musk. While Neuralink is conducting human trials in the United States, its technology has not yet received commercial approval.
A key difference between the two systems lies in their design. Neuralink’s N1 implant requires electrodes to be inserted directly into the brain's cortex, whereas NEO is positioned between the skull and the brain, using sensors placed near the brain's protective membrane. Researchers believe this less invasive approach could reduce surgical risks while maintaining effectiveness.
Experts view brain-computer interfaces as a breakthrough technology that could transform how humans interact with computers and assistive devices, offering new hope for millions of people living with neurological disorders.
