China’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed the arrest of a U.S. citizen identified as U Min Zin, saying the individual is suspected of spying and endangering China’s national security.
Speaking on Friday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Chinese authorities had already informed the U.S. consulate in Guangzhou about the detention.
The confirmation came after reports that the American citizen went missing in Kunming, a city in southwestern China, last week, according to media accounts cited by Reuters.
Chinese officials did not provide further details about the case, but maintained that the arrest is linked to national security concerns.
The case adds to ongoing diplomatic tensions between Beijing and Washington over issues of security, espionage, and mutual accusations of surveillance activities.
No further comment was immediately provided by U.S. officials at the time of reporting.
