At least 10 people have died after a boat carrying nearly 60 refugees and migrants capsized in the Mediterranean Sea near Malta, Italian authorities said on Sunday.
According to the Italian Coast Guard, a fishing vessel rescued 48 survivors after the overcrowded boat overturned about 83 kilometres east-southeast of Malta. The migrants had reportedly departed from Libya in an attempt to reach Europe.
Rescue teams recovered 10 bodies from the sea, while search operations continued under the coordination of Maltese authorities.
The latest tragedy highlights the ongoing dangers faced by refugees and migrants crossing the Mediterranean, one of the world’s deadliest migration routes.
Data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) shows that at least 990 migrants and refugees have died while attempting the Mediterranean crossing this year. More than 2,180 people were reported dead or missing during similar journeys in 2025.
The incident comes as European Union member states continue discussions on new migration policies that could allow rejected asylum seekers to be transferred to designated “return hubs” outside the EU.
Meanwhile, migration issues remain a source of political tension in Libya, where recent protests have been held over the presence of undocumented migrants and the role of international organisations operating in the country.
Authorities have not yet released the identities or nationalities of the victims as rescue efforts remain ongoing.
