Two police officers who defended the US Capitol during the January 6, 2021 riot have filed a lawsuit against the administration of Donald Trump over a controversial $1.8 billion “anti-weaponisation” compensation fund.
Officers Harry Dunn and Daniel Hodges described the fund as “the most brazen act of presidential corruption this century”, arguing it could be used to reward supporters involved in the Capitol attack.
The lawsuit, filed in Washington, DC, seeks to stop the government from distributing taxpayer money to individuals linked to the January 6 unrest, when thousands of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol in an attempt to block certification of the 2020 presidential election results.
According to the complaint, the officers fear the fund could encourage political violence and embolden extremist groups.
“If allowed to begin making payments, the fund will directly finance violent rioters and their supporters,” the lawsuit stated.
Dunn, a former US Capitol Police officer, and Hodges, who still serves with the Metropolitan Police Department, said they suffered injuries during the attack and continue to receive threats years later.
The dispute follows a recent settlement involving Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service over leaked tax records. As part of the agreement, the administration established the $1.776 billion compensation fund, officially described as support for victims of alleged government “weaponisation”.
Critics, however, say the arrangement represents a major conflict of interest because Trump controls both the Justice Department and the agencies involved in the settlement.
The officers’ lawsuit also accuses the administration of creating a system that could financially benefit January 6 participants after Trump previously issued pardons and sentence commutations for many people convicted over the Capitol riot.
The case will be heard in the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
