Taiwan’s President William Lai Ching-te has stated that the island’s future should be determined solely by its 23 million citizens, not by “external forces,” amid growing geopolitical tensions involving China and the United States.
Speaking on the second anniversary of his presidency, Lai emphasized his commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait while resisting any attempts by outside powers to influence Taiwan’s political status.
He also expressed willingness to continue dialogue with Beijing, but only on the basis of equality and respect, while rejecting accusations from China that his administration promotes separatism.
China strongly criticized Lai’s remarks, accusing him of encouraging “Taiwan independence” and escalating cross-strait tensions.
The statement comes as Taiwan faces internal political pressure, defence budget disputes, and shifting diplomatic dynamics with the United States, its key unofficial ally.
