Tensions have emerged within Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as more than 70 serving members of the National Assembly are reportedly set to lose their return tickets for the 2027 general elections following the party’s primary elections.
According to reports, the affected lawmakers include both senators and members of the House of Representatives, with several prominent figures failing to secure nominations for re-election. Among them are senators from states such as Ogun, Delta, Benue, Osun, Kwara, Imo, and Plateau, alongside dozens of federal lawmakers.
The primaries have been marked by widespread controversy, including protests, allegations of irregularities, and rejection of results by aggrieved aspirants. In Ondo State, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire reportedly escaped an armed attack during voting, which disrupted the exercise and caused panic among voters and officials.
In several states, losing aspirants have accused the party of imposition, manipulation, and lack of transparency, while others claim that voting either did not hold properly or was hijacked by political interests.
The APC National Secretariat has also faced criticism over the conduct of primary committees in some states, particularly in Delta, where disputes continue over whether results should have been announced locally or at the party headquarters in Abuja.
Despite the controversies, some incumbents and governors secured their tickets unopposed or through clear victories, including in Kwara, Taraba, and parts of Osun State.
The party is now expected to review petitions and appeals arising from the primaries as it prepares for the 2027 general elections amid growing internal tensions.
