Yasser Abbas, the son of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, has won a seat on the central committee of Fatah following the movement’s first general congress in a decade.
The 64-year-old businessman, who reportedly spends much of his time in Canada, secured a place on Fatah’s highest decision-making body during the Eighth General Conference held in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.
The three-day congress came at a critical moment for Fatah as the movement faces growing political pressure and declining public support amid the ongoing war in Gaza and long-standing internal divisions.
Veteran Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti, who has been imprisoned by Israel since 2002, received the highest number of votes to retain his committee seat. Senior officials Jibril Rajoub and Hussein al-Sheikh also kept their influential positions.
According to organisers, more than 94 percent of the 2,507 eligible delegates participated in the vote.
President Abbas, 90, who was re-elected as Fatah leader during the congress, pledged political reforms and promised long-delayed Palestinian presidential and parliamentary elections.
The Palestinian Authority has faced mounting criticism over allegations of corruption, political stagnation, and failure to hold elections, weakening its legitimacy among many Palestinians.
Analysts say the composition of Fatah’s central committee could shape the post-Abbas political era, with several senior figures already positioning themselves as possible successors.
Political science professor Ali Jarbawi said Yasser Abbas’s election may signal an attempt to secure future influence within the movement, although it does not automatically place him in line for the presidency.
