Saudi Arabia has expanded its smart transportation network ahead of the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage, introducing advanced rail, shuttle, and traffic management systems designed to move millions of pilgrims safely and efficiently across the holy sites.
Authorities say more than 1.6 million pilgrims are expected in and around Makkah during this year’s pilgrimage, prompting large-scale transport and crowd-control preparations.
At the heart of the operation is the Al-Mashaaer Al-Mugaddassah Metro, operated by Saudi Arabia Railways. The fully electric metro system is expected to transport more than two million passengers throughout the Hajj season.
The 18-kilometer railway links the holy sites of Mina, Muzdalifah, and Arafat through nine stations and operates 17 trains capable of carrying up to 3,000 passengers each. Officials say the system can move nearly 72,000 passengers every hour, helping reduce congestion during peak pilgrimage periods.
Saudi authorities noted that the metro has significantly reduced traffic pressure by eliminating around 50,000 bus trips annually within the holy sites, while also cutting carbon emissions through electric-powered transport.
The train network, which began operations in 2010, reaches speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour, allowing pilgrims to travel between Arafat and Mina in about 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, the Saudi Roads General Authority reported heavy traffic flow into Makkah as Hajj arrivals intensified. More than 75,000 vehicles reportedly entered the city through major highway routes on the fifth day of Dhul Hijjah.
Prince Mohammed bin Salman Road recorded the highest number of incoming vehicles, followed by the Taif–Makkah Road via Al-Sail Al-Kabeer and Al-Laith Road. Authorities said monitoring teams and logistics operations are working around the clock to maintain smooth traffic movement and ensure pilgrim safety.
In Madinah, the Madinah Bus project has launched special shuttle services connecting major stations with the Prophet’s Mosque and Quba Mosque during the Day of Arafah and Eid Al-Adha prayers.
Officials said the shuttle program is aimed at easing congestion and improving mobility for worshippers and visitors without disrupting regular public transport services.
Saudi Arabia has continued strengthening transportation, safety, and crowd-management systems as part of preparations for one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings under Saudi Vision 2030.
