Philippine authorities have ordered the arrest of Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa after the country’s Supreme Court rejected his attempt to stop detention linked to an International Criminal Court (ICC) case.
Justice officials said security agencies are actively searching for the senator and warned that anyone helping him avoid arrest could face legal consequences.
Dela Rosa, a former police chief and close ally of former President Rodrigo Duterte, is accused of crimes against humanity over his role in the Philippines’ controversial anti-drug campaign between 2016 and 2019. The ICC estimates that thousands of people were killed during the operation.
The senator recently went into hiding after staying briefly at the Senate building following fears of arrest. His lawyers say he remains in the Philippines.
Dela Rosa has denied involvement in illegal killings, insisting he did not encourage unlawful actions during the anti-drug crackdown.
Former President Rodrigo Duterte is also facing similar ICC charges and has been in ICC custody in The Hague since March 2025.
