Millions of Palestinians across Gaza, the occupied West Bank and refugee communities around the world commemorated the 78th anniversary of the Nakba on May 15, renewing calls for justice, self-determination and the right of return.
The Nakba, meaning “catastrophe” in Arabic, refers to the mass displacement of Palestinians during the 1948 war surrounding the creation of the state of Israel. Historians estimate that about 750,000 Palestinians were forced from their homes, while hundreds of villages and urban communities were destroyed or depopulated.
This year’s commemoration comes as the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains severe, with more than two million Palestinians displaced after months of war and destruction in the besieged territory. Many families continue living in overcrowded shelters and tent camps, particularly in southern Gaza.
In cities across the occupied West Bank, including Ramallah, Hebron and Bethlehem, Palestinians held rallies, cultural performances and marches carrying Palestinian flags and symbolic keys representing homes lost during the 1948 displacement.
Palestinian refugees and activists say the Nakba is not only a historical event but an ongoing experience of displacement and dispossession. Many families continue to preserve old house keys, land deeds and personal documents passed down through generations as symbols of their connection to their ancestral homes.
The issue of the “right of return” remains one of the most sensitive and unresolved aspects of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Palestinians argue that international law, including UN Resolution 194, supports the right of refugees to return to their homes.
As commemorations continue worldwide, Palestinians say Nakba Day serves both as a remembrance of past suffering and a renewed demand for freedom, dignity and national rights.
