A court in Pakistan has sentenced 23-year-old Umar Hayat to death for the murder of teenage social media influencer Sana Yousaf, whose killing sparked widespread debate over women’s safety in the country.
The verdict was delivered on Tuesday in Islamabad, nearly a year after the 17-year-old TikTok and Instagram personality was shot dead at her home on June 2, 2025.
Speaking after the ruling, Sana’s father, Hassan Yousaf, described the judgment as a warning to others involved in violence against women.
Police arrested Hayat in Faisalabad less than a day after the killing. Investigators said the suspect had become obsessively attached to Sana following online interactions and was angered after she repeatedly refused to meet him.
According to police records, Hayat travelled to Islamabad shortly before the incident and later visited Sana’s residence armed with a pistol. Authorities said an argument broke out inside the house before she was fatally shot in front of family members.
The case reignited national discussions about violence against women and so-called “honour” crimes in Pakistan, particularly involving female social media personalities.
Rights advocates say many women in Pakistan face threats and harassment for asserting independence online and offline. Data from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan showed that 346 women were killed in “honour”-related incidents in 2024, an increase from the previous year.
