Nigeria’s military says joint operations with the United States have killed 175 fighters linked to ISIL and its West Africa affiliate, ISWAP, during coordinated strikes in the country’s northeast.
According to Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, the operations — carried out alongside the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) — targeted militant checkpoints, weapons storage sites, logistics bases and financing networks used by the armed group.
Major-General Samaila Uba said the strikes were part of ongoing efforts by Nigerian forces to “hunt down and eliminate terrorists wherever they operate” across the country.
The announcement follows recent US-confirmed air operations in coordination with Nigerian authorities and comes days after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the killing of senior ISIL commander Abu Bilal al-Minuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, in another joint Nigeria-US operation.
Nigerian authorities also claimed that another senior ISWAP figure, Abd-al Wahhab — accused of coordinating attacks and propaganda — was killed alongside commanders Abu Musa al-Mangawi and Abu al-Muthanna al-Muhajir.
The military says the intensified operations reflect growing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States after Washington deployed troops to the country earlier this year in what was initially described as an advisory and training mission.
Security analysts say ISIL has increasingly shifted its focus toward Africa after setbacks in the Middle East, with groups operating in the Lake Chad Basin and Sahel remaining among the region’s deadliest armed factions.
