Moderate 5.2 Earthquake Hits Central Turkey

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck central Turkey on Sunday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The tremor was felt across several parts of the region, though authorities had not immediately released detailed information about injuries or structural damage.

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) was still assessing the situation as emergency teams monitored affected areas for possible aftershocks and damage.

The latest quake comes months after a stronger 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit western Turkey late last year in Balikesir province.

Turkey is located on several active seismic fault lines and frequently experiences earthquakes. The country continues to recover from the devastating February 2023 earthquakes that killed more than 50,000 people in southern Turkey and northern Syria.

Officials urged residents to remain cautious and follow emergency safety instructions as assessments continue.
