At least 19 people are feared trapped after a nine-storey building under construction collapsed in Angeles City, north of the Philippine capital Manila, early Sunday morning.
According to local officials, the structure suddenly gave way around 3 a.m., crashing onto itself and damaging a nearby hotel in the process. Rescue workers immediately launched search operations as emergency teams rushed to the scene.
Authorities said 26 people had been rescued, including two hotel occupants affected by the collapse. Officials are still trying to determine whether the missing workers are among those already rescued.
Witnesses described hearing a loud explosion-like sound moments before the building came down. A delivery rider who had just left the area said many initially believed an earthquake had occurred.
Videos circulating online showed huge piles of concrete, twisted steel beams and fallen utility poles covering the road near the construction site. Rescue efforts have been slowed by heavy debris and large concrete slabs blocking access to possible survivors.
City officials confirmed that the building’s walls and scaffolding appeared to have buckled before the collapse, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
The rescued victims were reported to be in stable condition as authorities continue search and identification efforts.
