At least three people have died while 17 others remain missing after severe flooding struck southwestern China’s Chongqing municipality, according to Chinese state media on Sunday.
The flooding hit Yongchuan district after heavy overnight rainfall from Saturday into early Sunday, triggering flash floods that swept through affected communities. Authorities said rescue teams are continuing search and recovery operations in the area.
China’s state news agency Xinhua reported that the casualty figures were confirmed as of 2:30 p.m. local time on Sunday.
In response to the disaster, China’s National Development and Reform Commission announced emergency support funding worth 20 million yuan (about $2.94 million) to assist reconstruction efforts and restore damaged infrastructure and public services in Chongqing.
The latest flooding adds to a series of extreme weather incidents affecting parts of China in recent months, raising concerns over disaster preparedness and climate-related emergencies.
Emergency officials have urged residents in vulnerable المناطق to remain alert as heavy rains are expected to continue in some regions.
