At least 20 people were killed and more than 50 others injured after a powerful bomb explosion struck a passenger train in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province.
According to reports, the blast occurred as the train was passing through the city, causing several carriages to derail and catch fire. Emergency responders and local residents rushed to rescue injured passengers from the damaged coaches.
The separatist group Balochistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the attack, which authorities say is among the deadliest incidents in the region in recent months.
Local media reported that hospitals in Quetta declared a state of emergency, with doctors and medical personnel ordered to remain on duty to treat the large number of casualties.
Witness footage shared online showed overturned train carriages, burned vehicles, and widespread destruction near the railway line. Several nearby homes and buildings were also reportedly damaged by the explosion.
Security analysts say attacks by separatist groups have intensified in Balochistan in recent months, particularly targeting infrastructure projects linked to China under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
The attack has renewed concerns over rising insecurity in the restive province, where armed groups have long accused the Pakistani government of political and economic marginalisation.
