Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has praised Pope Leo XIV for what he described as a “moral stance” on global conflicts, while also sharply criticising the United States and Israel over their foreign policies toward Iran and the wider region.
In a message addressed to the leader of the Catholic Church, Pezeshkian expressed gratitude for the Pope’s comments on international tensions, saying such positions reflect concern for justice and human values.
The Iranian president argued that US and Israeli actions constitute “illegal attacks” that go beyond Iran alone and undermine international law, global stability, and humanitarian principles.
He accused Washington and Tel Aviv of pursuing “dangerous and adventurous policies,” warning that the consequences of such actions would be felt globally, not only in the Middle East.
Pezeshkian further claimed that Iran remains committed to diplomacy and peaceful resolution of disputes, but insisted that repeated breakdowns in negotiations were due to what he described as US inconsistency and pressure tactics.
He also referenced past remarks attributed to former US President Donald Trump, saying they reflected hostility toward Iran, which Tehran views as unacceptable rhetoric.
According to the Iranian leader, Iran has continued to pursue dialogue through regional mediation efforts while defending what it calls its sovereignty and security interests.
He concluded by urging the international community to adopt what he described as a “fair and realistic approach” to counter what he called unlawful demands and aggressive policies by the United States, stressing that respect for international law is essential for global peace.
