Iran’s Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref has declared that Tehran will never relinquish control over the Strait of Hormuz, describing the strategic waterway as an integral part of Iran’s national sovereignty.
Speaking on Thursday, Aref said Iran considers the Strait of Hormuz its rightful territory and stressed that the country would defend its authority over the passage “at any cost.”
The remarks come amid escalating tensions following the recent US-Israeli conflict involving Iran and increasing disputes over maritime security in the Persian Gulf.
Iranian authorities have imposed tighter regulations on shipping activities through the strait after what Tehran described as hostile measures targeting Iranian vessels and ports. Officials insist the restrictions are part of Iran’s sovereign rights under international maritime law.
Tehran has also stated that the Strait of Hormuz will remain under strict Iranian management unless sanctions and maritime restrictions imposed against the country are removed and regional hostilities permanently end.
Iranian media reported that Chinese vessels were recently allowed to transit through the strategic waterway after consultations between Tehran and Beijing. According to reports, both sides reached an understanding regarding Iran’s shipping management procedures in the area.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy corridors, with a significant share of global oil and gas exports passing through the narrow route each day.
Iranian officials argue that the geography of the strait, combined with territorial water provisions under international law, gives Tehran a central role in regulating maritime traffic in the region.
The developments have intensified global concerns over energy markets and international shipping, as tensions in the Persian Gulf continue to affect oil prices and regional stability.
