Iran Highlights Advances in Agriculture as Domestic Food Production Reaches 85%

The Islamic Republic of Iran says it has made significant advances in agricultural production and food security, claiming that around 85% of essential food and basic commodities are now produced domestically.

According to Iran’s Minister of Agriculture, Gholamreza Nouri, the country is currently able to meet most of its food demand for its population of more than 86 million people through local production, with limited reliance on imports.

Officials say this progress has been achieved despite ongoing international sanctions and restrictions, which Iran describes as economic pressure affecting its trade and financial systems. They argue that domestic planning and supply management have helped prevent major shortages in staple goods such as wheat and bread.

The report also highlights government measures aimed at stabilizing food supply chains, including early procurement of wheat, increased strategic reserves, and support for bakeries through alternative fuel arrangements to ensure continued production during disruptions.

In addition to domestic farming, Iranian authorities say the country is expanding agricultural investment abroad, with projects reportedly covering hundreds of thousands of hectares in countries across Asia, Africa, and South America. These initiatives are presented as part of a long-term strategy to strengthen food security and reduce dependence on imports.

The government also claims progress in modernizing agriculture through satellite monitoring systems, crop forecasting technologies, and pest-control programs aimed at improving productivity and managing shortages more efficiently.

Officials further report that agricultural products now account for a notable share of non-oil exports, contributing to foreign exchange earnings alongside other sectors.

While Iranian authorities describe these developments as evidence of increased resilience and economic independence, independent verification of some figures and claims remains limited.
