WhatsApp users can now easily move their complete chat and media history from one Android device to another using the Chat Transfer feature. The process allows users to securely transfer messages, photos, videos, documents, and account information without relying on cloud backups.
According to WhatsApp Help Center, the feature works directly between two nearby Android phones and requires both devices to remain connected during the transfer process.
Requirements for Chat Transfer
Before starting the transfer, users must ensure:
Both phones are running Android 6 or later.
The same phone number is being used on the new phone.
WhatsApp has not yet been fully set up on the new device.
Both phones are close to each other and connected to power.
WiFi is enabled on both devices.
Necessary permissions, including nearby device access, are granted.
Steps to Transfer Chats
On the Old Phone
1. Open WhatsApp.
2. Go to Settings > Chats > Transfer Chats.
3. Tap Start and allow required permissions.
4. Prepare to scan the QR code displayed on the new phone.
On the New Phone
1. Install and open WhatsApp.
2. Tap Agree and Continue.
3. Verify the same phone number used on the old phone.
4. Select Transfer from Old Phone.
5. Tap Continue and allow permissions.
6. Scan the QR code using the old phone.
7. Accept the connection request on the new device.
8. Keep both phones unlocked while the transfer completes.
A progress bar will show how much of the chat history has been transferred. Messaging will pause temporarily until the process is finished.
Important Notes
Users are advised not to delete data or uninstall WhatsApp from the old phone until the transfer is confirmed successful.
Restarting both phones may help if the transfer gets stuck or fails.
Chat transfer is currently unavailable for the WhatsApp Business app.
Peer-to-peer payment messages and some channel media cannot be transferred.
WhatsApp says the feature is designed to make switching devices faster, easier, and more secure for Android users.
