The government of Chad has announced a three-day period of national mourning following a deadly assault on its military forces in the Lake Chad area, which resulted in significant casualties among soldiers.
According to official reports, at least 23 soldiers were killed and 26 others injured when armed militants attacked a military base located on Barka Tolorom Island earlier this week.
President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno has approved the mourning directive, ordering flags across the country to be flown at half-mast. During this period, all entertainment events have been suspended, while only religious music and prayers are permitted in public spaces and media broadcasts.
Authorities also reported that another attack occurred in the region shortly after the initial incident, although casualty figures from that assault have not yet been confirmed.
The Lake Chad basin, which borders Nigeria, Niger, and Cameroon, has remained a hotspot for insurgent violence involving groups such as Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province.
The ongoing insecurity continues to challenge military operations in the region, which has long suffered repeated extremist attacks.
