How to do istighfar for parents

How to do istighfar for parents

Seeking forgiveness (Istighfār) for your parents is a noble act in Islam and a sign of righteousness. The Qur’an teaches us to constantly make du‘a for them—whether they are alive or have passed away.

1. Qur’anic Du‘a for Parents.

The most important and authentic supplication is:

Arabic:

> رَّبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

Transliteration:
> Rabbi ighfir lī wa li-wālidayya warḥamhumā kamā rabbayānī ṣaghīrā.

Meaning:
> “My Lord, forgive me and my parents, and have mercy on them as they raised me when I was small.” (Qur’an 17:24)

This is the best and simplest Istighfār for parents.

2. Other Powerful Du‘as for Parents.

✔️ General forgiveness:

> Allāhumma ighfir li-wālidayya
“O Allah, forgive my parents.”

✔️ Expanded du‘a:
> Allāhumma ighfir li-wālidayya, warḥamhumā, wa ‘āfihimā, wa‘fu ‘anhumā
“O Allah, forgive them, have mercy on them, grant them well-being, and pardon them.”

3. How to Make It Effective.
To make Istighfār for your parents more meaningful:

✅ Be sincere

Feel gratitude for their sacrifices

Remember their efforts in raising you

✅ Mention them specifically

You can say their names in du‘a (quietly)

✅ Be consistent

Make it a daily habit, even if just a few seconds

4. Best Times to Pray for Them.

Your du‘a is more likely to be accepted at:

During Sujood (prostration)

After Salah

In the last third of the night

On Fridays

While fasting or at iftar

5. If Your Parents Have Passed Away.

Istighfār becomes even more important because:

Their deeds have stopped

But your du‘a continues to benefit them

The Prophet ﷺ said:
> “When a person dies, their deeds end except three… a righteous child who prays for them.” (Muslim)

So your Istighfār:
Raises their rank in Jannah

Brings them mercy in the grave

6. Combine Istighfār with Good Deeds.

You can increase the benefit by:

Giving charity (Sadaqah) on their behalf

Reciting Qur’an and dedicating reward

Maintaining family ties they cared about.

Simple Daily Practice.
After every Salah:
👉 Allāhumma ighfir li-wālidayya

Before sleep:
👉 Recite the full Qur’anic du‘a

Anytime you remember them:
👉 Say Astaghfirullāh and include them in your intention

Final Reminder.
Making Istighfār for your parents is:

A way of showing gratitude

A source of barakah in your own life

A means for Allah to forgive you as well.
