The Yemeni government has approved a draft law seeking to designate the Houthi militia as a terrorist organisation and criminalise its activities and financing.
The cabinet approved the proposed legislation on Sunday during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shaya al-Zindani in Aden, Yemen's temporary capital, according to a statement from his office.
The decision followed a deadly attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which reportedly killed 12 people and injured 309 others.
The attack attracted widespread international condemnation, while the Houthi militia threatened to continue targeting Saudi Arabia.
Following a presentation by the Minister of Legal Affairs, the cabinet directed relevant officials to complete the constitutional and legal procedures required to ratify the draft law.
The Yemeni government described the country as being at a decisive stage in efforts to restore sovereignty over its entire territory and end what it called the Houthi coup, which it accused Iran of financing and directing.
Prime Minister al-Zindani also instructed government authorities to strengthen their preparedness and provide the necessary support to the armed forces, military formations, security agencies and Popular Resistance forces.
The proposed legislation represents a further step by Yemen's internationally recognised government to intensify its response to the Houthi movement amid escalating regional tensions.
