Swedish Parliament Rejects Magdalena Andersson’s Bid to Become Prime Minister

Sweden’s parliament has rejected Social Democratic Party leader Magdalena Andersson’s bid to become prime minister, prolonging political uncertainty following last month’s general election.

The decision, announced on Thursday, was widely anticipated after disagreements among four centre-left opposition parties over the composition of a new government.

Although the four parties secured a parliamentary majority in the September 13 election, winning a combined 176 seats against the 173 seats held by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s right-wing bloc, they have yet to agree on how to form a government.

Only Andersson’s Social Democrats voted in favour of her appointment, while the other parties voted against her bid.

Speaking to journalists after the parliamentary vote, Andersson said she had expected the process of appointing a new prime minister to take time and require several ballots.

The parliament’s speaker is now expected to invite Kristersson, leader of the Moderate Party, to attempt to form a government.

However, Kristersson faces significant challenges in securing majority support in parliament. If his attempt fails, the responsibility of forming a government could return to Andersson.

Sweden’s political future remains uncertain as lawmakers continue efforts to find a candidate capable of securing sufficient parliamentary backing.

Thursday’s vote was the first of a possible four ballots. If parliament fails to approve a prime minister after the permitted attempts, a new general election must be called.
