Chinese National, 18 Others Jailed for Terrorism and Related Crimes in Kebbi

A Federal High Court sitting in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, has sentenced several individuals, including a Chinese national, to various prison terms for terrorism-related offences, illegal possession of firearms, and other criminal activities.

The Chinese national, Ripin Liu, was sentenced to six years in prison, while two other defendants, Aliyu Hadari and Umar Musa Uzzi, received 15-year prison sentences each.

Liu was arrested with a Beretta pistol and convicted in connection with the offences.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Emmanuel Gakko held that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the defendants provided logistical support to terrorists and conspired to commit terrorism, contrary to the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The court heard that the defendants were intercepted along Yauri Road while travelling in a vehicle allegedly purchased specifically to transport kidnapped victims to a forest hideout.

The judge also ordered the forfeiture of the vehicle and a Bajaj motorcycle to the Federal Government after establishing their connection to the crimes.

Other Defendants Sentenced

In separate cases, the court sentenced several other individuals for various offences.

Mohammed Bello Ibrahim, also known as Banki, received four years in prison without the option of a fine, while Abubakar Siddi was sentenced to three years without the option of a fine.

Mohammed Bako, Bello Dantiye, Aliyu Dandaula and Abubakar Usman were each sentenced to three years' imprisonment without the option of a fine.

Buba Alhaji Umaru, who was arrested in Bagudo Local Government Area after allegedly entering Nigeria from a neighbouring country with a locally manufactured pistol, also received a three-year prison sentence.

Meanwhile, John Zweme was sentenced to two years and six months in prison, with an option of a fine, while Aliyu Bako and Sani Alaramma each received two-year sentences, also with the option of a fine.

Six Convicted for Vandalising Electric Cables

In another development, the police secured the conviction of six individuals identified as economic saboteurs for allegedly vandalising and stealing electric cables in the Sakaba area of Kebbi State.

The convicted individuals were identified as Sani Tanko, Ibrahim Hamza, Samson Sunday, Abdulrahman Isah, Adamu Musa and Masudu.

They received prison sentences ranging from three to eight years.

The convictions form part of efforts by law enforcement agencies to tackle terrorism, kidnapping-related activities, illegal possession of firearms and the destruction of public infrastructure in Kebbi State.
