Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have killed at least 10 Nigerian soldiers and injured more than 20 others during an attack on a military base in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria.
The coordinated assault reportedly took place on Tuesday night in Guzamala Local Government Area, where the attackers overwhelmed troops, destroyed military vehicles and set parts of nearby Mairari village on fire.
According to military sources and local residents, the attack also claimed the lives of at least five civilians and a forest guard. More than 20 people were reportedly wounded during the incident.
The sources disclosed the information on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly about the attack.
Before launching the assault on the military base, the insurgents reportedly seized more than 40 fishing boats in Tumbun Barebari, a nearby lakeside community.
A fisherman identified as Jibrin Hassan confirmed that his boat was among those taken during the raid.
Another fisherman, Babagana Muhammad, described the incident as a simultaneous attack, adding that the fishermen were not physically harmed during the operation.
Meanwhile, efforts to obtain an official comment from the military were unsuccessful, as Captain Mohammed Goni, a military spokesperson, did not respond to calls and messages seeking clarification.
The latest incident comes amid a resurgence of attacks by Islamist militant groups, including Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), despite years of military operations aimed at ending the insurgency.
The groups have intensified their activities in recent weeks, raising fresh concerns about security in Nigeria's northeastern region.
Last week, Nigerian troops reportedly repelled an attack on a military position in Borno State, killing more than 25 ISWAP fighters. However, the military did not disclose its casualties in that encounter.
The Boko Haram insurgency has persisted for approximately 17 years, causing widespread loss of lives, displacement and destruction across northeastern Nigeria.
