The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewale Adebayo, has called for the immediate release of five protesters reportedly detained in Borno State for participating in a demonstration against President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The protesters were identified as Ba’ana Grema, Mustapha Abba, Abacha Mohammed Ali, Adam Umar Gubio and Abdulhamid Mohammed.
Adebayo made the demand in a statement issued by the Movement Adebayo for President (MAP), describing the continued detention of the protesters as a violation of their democratic rights.
He maintained that wearing T-shirts bearing the inscription “Tinubu Must Go” should not constitute an offence, provided the protesters conducted themselves peacefully.
The SDP presidential candidate called on the Borno State Government, the police and the Federal Government to respect citizens’ constitutional rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
He also urged security agencies to remain politically neutral as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
According to Adebayo, the police have a responsibility to protect citizens exercising their democratic rights and must not allow themselves to be used against opposition parties or candidates.
He further warned against the alleged use of law enforcement agencies to intimidate opposition figures and Nigerians expressing political opinions different from those of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Adebayo appealed to Nigerians and other stakeholders to support efforts to secure the release of the five detainees, insisting that citizens should not face punishment for peacefully expressing their political views.
