Israel Detains Over 2,000 Palestinian Children Since 2023, Rights Group Reports

Israeli forces have detained more than 2,000 Palestinian children since October 2023, with at least 350 reportedly still held in Israeli prisons under harsh conditions, according to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society.

The Palestinian rights organisation disclosed this in a report released on Wednesday, accusing Israeli authorities of intensifying the arrest and detention of Palestinian children amid the ongoing conflict.

The report stated that Israeli forces arrested at least six Palestinian children in Hebron, in the occupied West Bank, on Tuesday.

However, the organisation said the exact number of children detained from Gaza remains unknown because thousands of people, including children, are missing, while concerns persist over alleged enforced disappearances.

The group also criticised Israel’s practice of holding children without formal charges or a specified release date, saying it undermines their family relationships, education and emotional stability.

Report Alleges Abuse and Denial of Medical Care

According to the report, Palestinian children in detention face intimidation, arrests, alleged torture, starvation and denial of medical treatment.

The organisation highlighted the case of 15-year-old Mohammed Hamid, who reportedly contracted scabies while detained at Ofer Prison.

His condition allegedly deteriorated, resulting in severe infections that required heart surgery and intensive care treatment. He later underwent the amputation of one of his legs.

The report also cited the case of 17-year-old Walid Ahmed, who died in March 2025 after spending six months in Megiddo Prison.

An Israeli judge reportedly halted the investigation into Ahmed’s death in December, stating that although evidence of starvation existed, the precise cause of death had not been conclusively established.

American Teenagers Also Among Those Detained

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society also raised concerns about American teenagers who have been detained by Israeli authorities.

One of them, Mohammed Ibrahim, a teenager from Florida, was held at Megiddo Prison before being released following sustained advocacy by US-based organisations and appeals from senior American lawmakers.

Another teenager, Abdalkareem Issa Ahmed Safi, was reportedly arrested during a nighttime raid at his family’s home in the occupied West Bank in June. He turned 18 while in detention and was subsequently transferred from a youth detention area to the adult section of Ofer Prison.

The report also mentioned 16-year-old Adam Wajeh Abdelfattah Karakrah, an American teenager arrested in July. Although he was expected to be released in August after his family secured bail, Israeli authorities reportedly reversed the decision.

Rights Group Calls for International Intervention

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society urged the international community to take concrete action to secure the release of children it considers arbitrarily detained.

The organisation also called for investigations into alleged abuses and demanded an end to torture, starvation and the denial of medical care in Israeli detention facilities.

Since the war in Gaza began in October 2023, Israeli forces have detained more than 25,000 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, alongside thousands of others in Gaza, according to the report cited by Al Jazeera.

The allegations have renewed concerns among Palestinian rights advocates about the treatment of detained children and the protection of minors during armed conflict.
