US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has resigned from his position, the White House confirmed on Monday, amid reports of tensions between him and US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly did not dispute reports of Driscoll’s resignation. Instead, she praised his performance, saying he had been effective in advancing President Donald Trump’s agenda within the Department of the Army.
Kelly highlighted Driscoll’s leadership during US military operations, efforts to strengthen military readiness and combat capability, as well as his involvement in negotiations connected to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Driscoll, a former US Army veteran who served in Iraq, previously ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2020 before becoming an adviser to Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
He was also reportedly a close associate of Vice President JD Vance, whom he knew from law school. However, reports indicate that Driscoll later experienced disagreements with Hegseth.
Democratic Senator Jack Reed, the senior Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, criticised the situation and blamed Hegseth for Driscoll’s departure. Reed said President Trump should recognise what he described as the damage being caused to the Department of Defence.
Driscoll’s resignation comes at a difficult time for the US Army. Army Chief of Staff General Randy George was dismissed by Hegseth in April, and a permanent replacement has yet to be nominated.
If Driscoll’s resignation is formally accepted, the Army could be left without permanent civilian and uniformed leadership at the top.
