US Vice President JD Vance has said President Donald Trump’s decision to share an AI-generated video showing an apparent attack on Iran was intended as a warning to Tehran.
The video, posted by Trump on his Truth Social account, depicts missiles striking Iran’s Kharg Island and destroying what appears to be oil-processing infrastructure.
Speaking to reporters in Maryland on Monday, Vance said the message was directed at Iran over its alleged attacks and threats against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Vance, the United States has several options available to respond if Iran continues targeting commercial vessels.
The development comes amid renewed military tensions between Washington and Tehran following an exchange of attacks after nearly a month without direct confrontation.
The United States said it had targeted missile launchers on Iran’s Larak Island that were allegedly preparing to deploy naval mines into the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international shipping route.
Iran subsequently launched missiles toward three military bases in the United Arab Emirates and Jordan where US forces are stationed. The missiles reportedly failed to hit their intended targets.
Kharg Island is a major hub for Iran’s oil exports and handles a significant portion of the country’s crude shipments. Trump has previously threatened military action against the island, although earlier US strikes reportedly avoided its oil infrastructure.
The latest threats have increased concerns over the security of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy supplies.
