Turkish authorities have launched a search and rescue operation after two Turkish-flagged commercial vessels collided in the Marmara Sea, south of Istanbul.
The collision occurred at around 3:00 a.m. local time, approximately 32 kilometres south of Silivri, according to the Istanbul Governor’s Office.
Authorities lost contact with the Tugberk Imamoglu, one of the vessels involved in the accident, along with its 10 crew members. The other vessel, the Turkish-flagged Alsu, appeared to have escaped serious damage.
The Turkish Coast Guard immediately deployed several naval units from its Marmara and Bosphorus commands, as well as a coast guard helicopter, to search for the missing crew members and locate the vessel.
Search and rescue efforts are continuing as authorities work to determine what caused the collision.
