Apple has changed the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” for users of its Maps application in the United States, following pressure from President Donald Trump’s administration.
The change makes Apple the second major US technology company, after Google, to adopt the controversial name change ordered by Trump.
The US president’s executive order changed the name in the US Geographic Names Information System, the federal database used by the government to standardise geographical names. However, the order does not legally require private companies to adopt the new name.
US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Trump had contacted Apple directly and asked the company to update the lake’s name on Apple Maps.
Apple has previously followed other geographical name changes introduced by Trump, including changing the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” and restoring the name “Mount McKinley” for Alaska’s Denali.
Google currently displays different names depending on the user’s location. US users see “Lake America,” Canadian users see “Lake Ontario,” while users in other countries see both names.
Not every mapping company has accepted the change. MapQuest has publicly rejected the renaming, saying users can call the lake whatever they choose.
The dispute comes amid worsening relations between the United States and Canada during Trump’s second term. The two countries have also imposed retaliatory tariffs on billions of dollars worth of goods.
Lake Ontario lies between the United States and Canada and has historically been known by its current name, which has Indigenous origins.
