Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has dismissed claims that United States Federal Bureau of Investigation records link President Bola Tinubu to criminality.
Omokri made the clarification during the City Boy Movement Podcast, hosted by O’tega Ogra, in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to him, an FBI record should not automatically be interpreted as a criminal record.
“There is no criminal FBI record against President Bola Tinubu. There’s nothing like that,” Omokri said.
He explained that a record and a criminal record were two different things, adding that an FBI check reportedly conducted following a request by Nigerian authorities found no criminal arrest records, outstanding warrants or wanted status against Tinubu.
Omokri also dismissed suggestions that the records currently being discussed publicly relate to a new criminal case against the President.
He said the matter originated from a Freedom of Information Act request concerning an investigation dating back to 1993, rather than a new case filed in 2026.
The ambassador-designate said his support for Tinubu was based on what he described as verifiable facts and evidence.
He recalled travelling to the United States to investigate claims surrounding Tinubu’s educational background, saying documents obtained during the process changed his earlier view of the President.
Omokri also said certified documents relating to Tinubu’s civil forfeiture case caused him to reconsider some of his previous claims about the President.
“I was able to get certified true copies of these documents, and they established beyond reasonable doubt that I was wrong,” he said.
Omokri, who previously worked politically with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, said he would continue to defend what he believes to be the truth regardless of his current appointment.
Speaking on the 2027 presidential election, Omokri expressed confidence that Tinubu would secure victory.
He argued that several of Tinubu’s economic policies—including the removal of fuel subsidies, exchange-rate reforms, devolution of powers and student-loan programmes—were among policies he had previously supported while working with the Peoples Democratic Party.
Omokri also defended the removal of fuel subsidies, arguing that reinstating them would place additional pressure on Nigeria’s finances.
He said subsidising fuel could also encourage the movement of petroleum products into neighbouring West African countries, thereby increasing Nigeria’s economic burden.
The ambassador-designate urged Nigerians to assess the Tinubu administration based on measurable results rather than political sentiments.
He said his support for the President did not mean abandoning his principles, stressing that patriotism, truth and Nigeria’s development remained his priorities.
