The Nigeria Customs Service, Kebbi Area Command, has held talks with Nigerien Customs officials on ways to strengthen legitimate trade along the Kamba–Tungan Gyado border corridor.
The meeting, held on Thursday, focused on addressing challenges affecting cross-border commerce, improving revenue generation and easing economic difficulties faced by communities on both sides of the border.
The engagement was disclosed in a statement by the Kebbi Area Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mustapha Mubarak.
The meeting was attended by the Customs Area Controller of the Kebbi Command, Mahmoud Ibrahim, and the Comptroller of Douanes du Dosso in Niger Republic, Abdoulaye Vincent, among other stakeholders.
Speaking during the visit, Vincent expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Customs authorities for hosting the Nigerien delegation. He called for stronger cooperation between the two countries’ customs services, particularly to facilitate trade through the Kamba corridor.
He said insecurity along routes through Burkina Faso and Togo, coupled with the prevailing diplomatic situation involving Benin Republic, had disrupted regional trade.
Vincent therefore urged traders to increase legitimate exports through the Kamba corridor, saying this would help improve government revenue and reduce economic hardship among communities along the route.
Responding, Ibrahim welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed the Kebbi Command’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Nigerien Customs.
He said the command would sensitise traders and other stakeholders on customs procedures and encourage greater use of the Kamba corridor.
According to him, increased legitimate trade would boost government revenue, create employment opportunities and improve the livelihoods of residents in border communities.
Ibrahim also announced plans to visit the Nigerien Customs Command in Dosso to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and trade facilitation.
The meeting ended with the Sarkin Shikon Kamba, Mamuda Zarumai, expressing appreciation to the Customs Area Controller for promoting an environment conducive to legitimate business and supporting the economic welfare of Kamba residents.
Other stakeholders at the meeting included the Chairman of Dendi Ganda and the Secretary-General of SNAT Gaya, Abubakar Inusa.
