U.S. Senator Ed Markey has secured the Democratic nomination for the Senate seat in Massachusetts after defeating younger challenger and Representative Seth Moulton in Tuesday’s primary election.
The result highlighted the continued strength of several of the state’s long-serving Democratic lawmakers, with Representatives Stephen Lynch and Richard Neal also defeating younger challengers in their respective races.
Markey, 80, won despite Moulton, 47, campaigning on the need for generational change in Democratic leadership. Markey was backed by prominent progressives, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, while Moulton positioned himself as a more moderate alternative.
Markey also criticised Moulton over his past comments regarding transgender girls participating in girls’ sports. Moulton later apologised and reaffirmed his support for the transgender community.
Younger challengers fall short
Progressive candidates made competitive challenges against veteran lawmakers but failed to defeat them.
In the 8th Congressional District, 39-year-old progressive lawyer Patrick Roath challenged 71-year-old Stephen Lynch but ultimately lost. In the 1st District, 39-year-old public school teacher Jeromie Whalen was defeated by 77-year-old Richard Neal.
The results suggest that Massachusetts voters did not necessarily reject progressive politics, but that established lawmakers retained significant political strength.
Massachusetts differs from national Democratic trend
The outcome contrasts with recent Democratic primaries in other states, where younger progressive candidates have successfully unseated longtime lawmakers.
In Massachusetts, however, all three major challenges to veteran Democrats failed. Markey himself remained firmly aligned with the party’s progressive wing, while Lynch and Neal defeated candidates who campaigned from the left.
Biden-backed candidate wins open House race
Former Biden White House aide Dan Koh won the Democratic primary for Massachusetts’ 6th Congressional District, which became open after Moulton decided to run for the Senate.
Koh received endorsements from former President Joe Biden, former Vice President Kamala Harris and former Boston Mayor Marty Walsh. He is now considered the favourite to win the heavily Democratic district in November.
Markey heads into November
Markey will face Republican John Deaton in the November general election. Deaton, who previously challenged Elizabeth Warren for the Senate in 2024, ran unopposed in the Republican primary.
Because Massachusetts strongly favours Democratic candidates, Tuesday’s primary victories could effectively determine much of the state’s congressional representation for the next term.
