Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have purchased a historic castle estate covering about 440 acres in County Waterford, Ireland.
The property, known as Strancally Castle, will serve as a family home and base for the couple when they visit Ireland, where Meta has its international headquarters.
The purchase price was not officially disclosed, but The Irish Times estimated the estate's value at between €20 million and €30 million.
A spokesperson for Zuckerberg confirmed the purchase and said that Mark and his family were excited to continue looking after the historic property and spend more time in Ireland.
About Strancally Castle
Strancally Castle sits on a 178-hectare estate, equivalent to roughly 440 acres, in the Blackwater Valley of County Waterford.
The castle was built in 1830 for John Keily, a former Conservative Member of Parliament. It was designed by architects James and George Richard Pain.
The estate is known for its large grounds and historic character. According to the book The Houses of Ireland, the distance between the dining room and kitchen is so considerable that walking between them could take around four and a half minutes.
Before Zuckerberg and Chan acquired the property, it belonged to Michael Alen-Buckley, co-founder of London-based investment firm RAB Capital, and his wife, Giancarla. They purchased the estate in the early 2000s and carried out extensive restoration work.
The previous owners said they were grateful to have had the opportunity to preserve and restore Strancally Castle during the 25 years they owned it. They also expressed their satisfaction that Zuckerberg and his family planned to continue caring for the castle and its surrounding grounds.
Zuckerberg's Connection to Ireland
The purchase further strengthens Zuckerberg's connection with Ireland. Meta has maintained its international headquarters in the country for many years, making Ireland an important location for the company's global operations.
Strancally Castle will now provide Zuckerberg and his family with a private base during their visits.
The historic estate, built nearly two centuries ago, has now become the latest major property associated with one of the world's most prominent technology executives.
