Four members of the same family have died after a three-storey building collapsed in the Popo Giwa area of Ilorin, Kwara State, on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred at about 5am at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, near Gogoro Mosque. Eight members of the family were reportedly trapped under the rubble.
According to eyewitnesses, the father was a serving soldier, while the mother worked as a casual staff member at the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies in Ilorin.
Emergency responders launched a rescue operation shortly after the building collapsed. Four people, including a child identified as Firdaus, were rescued alive and taken to hospital for treatment.
An excavator was later deployed to the scene to help remove debris and reach those trapped beneath the structure.
The Kwara State Fire Service confirmed that four people died while four others were rescued.
The agency’s Public Relations Officer, Hassan Adekunle, said emergency responders received a distress call at about 5am and immediately mobilised to the scene.
He explained that the rescue operation involved several agencies, including the Hospitals Management Board, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kwara State Emergency Management Agency, National Emergency Management Agency, Fire Service and the Red Cross.
The cause of the collapse has not yet been established. Adekunle said authorities would determine the cause after conducting a proper assessment of the structure.
The Kwara State Emergency Management Agency also confirmed the death of four people and the rescue of four others. Its Secretary, Magaji Saadudeen, said the victims and survivors had been taken to hospital.
Meanwhile, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, said the collapsed section was the boys’ quarters of the three-storey building.
He said the remaining part of the building had been evacuated as authorities assessed the structure to ensure the safety of residents.
Representing Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq at the scene, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Lawal Olohungbebe, described the incident as unfortunate and sympathised with the victims’ families.
He urged residents and property developers to comply with building and town-planning regulations and ensure that access roads to residential areas remain unobstructed for emergency operations.
The Chairman of Ilorin West Local Government Area, AbdulRahman Babatunde Ladan, said about six to seven ambulances were deployed to the scene to assist with the evacuation of victims.
He advised residents to report structural defects immediately and evacuate buildings whenever they notice signs that could indicate a possible collapse.
Authorities also urged developers to use quality construction materials and engage qualified professionals to supervise building projects in order to prevent structural failures.
