Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has said that Israel still considers the removal of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip necessary, describing it as the only way to resolve the situation in the territory.
Speaking at a conference organised by the Israeli newspaper Ynet, Katz said there could be “no real solution for Gaza” without what Israeli officials refer to as Palestinian “migration” or “immigration.”
Katz said US President Donald Trump had not abandoned the proposal but had instead put it on hold.
“At the moment, Trump has not cancelled it; he has frozen it,” Katz said, adding that the proposal to relocate Palestinians from Gaza continues to be discussed.
He also said Israel was prepared to take control of Gaza “by sea, by air and by any means,” while Egypt had refused to accept Palestinian refugees.
The proposal to remove Palestinians from Gaza has faced strong opposition from Palestinian rights groups and several Middle Eastern governments, with critics warning that the forced displacement of Palestinians could amount to ethnic cleansing.
Trump had previously proposed that the United States take control of Gaza and oversee its redevelopment after Palestinians were relocated. The plan sparked widespread international criticism.
A later US-backed ceasefire proposal stated that Palestinians should be allowed to remain in Gaza and that those who voluntarily leave should have the right to return.
However, Katz said Israel still believes Palestinian displacement is ultimately necessary and that US support would be required to implement such a plan.
US Senator Chris Van Hollen criticised Katz’s remarks, saying they confirmed concerns that Israel intends to remove Palestinians from the territory.
The comments come amid continued tensions over Gaza, including disputes over humanitarian aid, reconstruction and the future governance and security of the territory.
