The Iranian Red Crescent Society has called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate a US missile strike that hit a wedding gathering in Kuhestak, southern Iran, killing at least four people and injuring 67 others.
The humanitarian organisation submitted a letter to the ICC on Wednesday, describing the location as civilian and calling for an independent and impartial investigation.
According to the Red Crescent, those killed were two women and two children, aged four and 16. Iranian officials said most of the wounded were also women and children, warning that the death toll could rise because some victims remain in critical condition.
The organisation said the attack could constitute a war crime, arguing that international humanitarian law prohibits deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian objects, as well as attacks expected to cause disproportionate civilian casualties.
The US Central Command said it was aware of reports about the incident but maintained that US forces do not target civilians.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei rejected the US statement, accusing Washington of having a history of civilian casualties in previous military operations.
Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Darzi, has also urged the UN Security Council to condemn the attack, describing the killing of civilians and children as a serious violation of international humanitarian law.
The strike occurred amid renewed US attacks on Iranian coastal areas near the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Health Ministry said at least 18 people were killed and 142 wounded in Tuesday's attacks.
Neither the United States nor Iran is a party to the ICC's Rome Statute. However, human rights advocates say Iran could potentially grant the ICC temporary jurisdiction over alleged crimes committed on its territory.
The latest violence comes after months of conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran, with Iranian authorities reporting thousands of deaths since the war began.
