Iran has called on the United Nations Security Council to condemn what it described as a deadly US strike on a residential home hosting a wedding ceremony in southern Iran.
Iranian Ambassador and Chargé d’Affaires to the UN, Gholamhossein Darzi, made the appeal in a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the president of the Security Council on Wednesday.
According to the Iranian diplomat, the strike hit a wedding gathering in Kouhestak, Sirik County, in Hormozgan Province, killing five civilians, including a four-year-old child, and injuring more than 70 others.
Darzi said the incident was part of a wider series of US strikes on southern Iranian cities that reportedly killed at least 18 people and injured 108 others.
Iran condemned the attack as a serious violation of international humanitarian law, arguing that civilians and children must not be deliberately targeted.
The Iranian envoy also accused the United States and Israel of repeatedly attacking civilian infrastructure in Iran, including residential areas, schools, hospitals, airports, bridges, roads and railway facilities.
The letter also referred to a February 28 attack on a primary school in Minab, Hormozgan Province. Iran claims the attack killed more than 168 students, mostly girls between seven and 12 years old, as well as teachers and school staff, while 110 others were injured.
Darzi said Iran's retaliatory military actions were carried out under what Tehran considers its inherent right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
He urged the Security Council to condemn the attacks, investigate the Kouhestak incident, include both the Minab school and Kouhestak wedding attack in future reports on civilian protection, hold the United States accountable for the damage and demand compensation.
