Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has rejected any plan to forcibly displace Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, reaffirming Egypt’s support for Palestinian rights.
El-Sisi made the statement on Wednesday during a meeting in Cairo with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, the Egyptian president said Egypt remained firmly opposed to the displacement of Palestinians or any attempt to undermine the Palestinian cause.
Abbas thanked Egypt for its position and reiterated that Gaza is an integral part of the Palestinian state.
The statement came after Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the Israeli military would “finish the job” in Gaza and move ahead with what he described as a migration plan.
Katz had earlier said Israel was prepared to remove Palestinians from Gaza by land and sea, while claiming that discussions were taking place with the United States over possible destinations.
US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has denied that Washington supports forcibly removing Palestinians from Gaza.
The conflict has displaced most of Gaza’s population, while large parts of the territory have been destroyed. Palestinian officials cited in the report say more than 73,700 Palestinians have been killed during the three-year war.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israeli forces will not withdraw from Gaza, despite a US-backed ceasefire proposal that included an Israeli withdrawal as a condition.
Egypt has repeatedly opposed the permanent displacement of Palestinians from Gaza and has called for a political solution that preserves Palestinian statehood.
