Zelenskyy Says Ukraine Sends New Peace Proposals to US

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukraine has submitted new proposals to the United States aimed at ending the four-and-a-half-year war with Russia.

In a video address, Zelenskyy said the proposals were designed to strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities, particularly its air defences, while increasing pressure on Moscow to push Russia towards ending the war rather than prolonging it.

He did not disclose details of the proposals.

Peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have largely stalled since the United States and Israel launched their war against Iran. US negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner last visited Moscow in January and have yet to travel to Kyiv.

Ukraine has repeatedly called for a ceasefire, while Russia has said it wants a settlement. Moscow, however, insists that any agreement must include Ukraine giving up four regions claimed by Russia and addressing what it describes as the “root causes” of the conflict.

Zelenskyy also accused Moscow of planning a new large-scale military mobilisation after Russia’s parliamentary elections next month. He claimed Russia could mobilise several hundred thousand people by the end of the year, with another similar number expected the following year.

Russian officials have previously denied that another mobilisation is necessary.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced that Russia had released former US Marine Robert Gilman after about four years in detention. Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to release Gilman on humanitarian grounds, with no prisoner exchange involved.

Gilman, 32, was detained in Russia in January 2022 following an alleged altercation with a police officer. He was later designated by the US government as wrongfully detained.

US officials said Washington had been pressing for his release so he could receive medical treatment. Gilman was expected to undergo medical evaluation before being transferred to a rehabilitation centre in San Antonio, Texas.
