YouTube is reportedly offering millions of dollars to select high-profile creators in exchange for keeping their content exclusive to the platform, as it seeks to counter Netflix’s growing push into creator-driven programming.
According to reports from Bloomberg and Business Insider, YouTube has begun holding exclusivity discussions with a small number of creators. In at least one case, the platform reportedly made a verbal offer worth millions of dollars for a creator to post exclusively on YouTube for a specified period.
The move comes as Netflix expands efforts to license content from popular online personalities, including Ms. Rachel and Salish Matter. Netflix has also increased its focus on video podcasts, an area where YouTube has traditionally dominated.
Netflix has already secured deals involving programmes such as The Bill Simmons Podcast and The Breakfast Club, with some agreements requiring episodes to be removed from YouTube.
The reported YouTube strategy marks a shift from its traditional reliance on advertising revenue-sharing and other creator-support programmes. Instead, the company appears increasingly willing to make direct financial offers to retain its biggest stars.
Sources also said YouTube has linked some discussions to additional benefits, including marketing support and access to brand deals, potentially increasing the value of exclusivity arrangements.
The battle highlights the growing importance of digital creators in the global entertainment industry. As creators build massive audiences independently of traditional television and film, both YouTube and Netflix are competing for exclusive access to their content and loyal fan bases.
