Xi Orders Stronger Disaster Preparedness as Deadly Floods and Landslides Hit China

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for stronger disaster prevention and response measures following a series of deadly floods, landslides and extreme weather events across China this summer.

Xi urged authorities to strengthen monitoring and early-warning systems, improve flood-control and drainage infrastructure, and focus more on preventing disasters before they occur.

His remarks, published on Saturday in Qiushi, the Communist Party’s flagship journal, followed China’s strongest typhoon of the year and a series of landslides that killed dozens of people.

Xi said climate change was contributing to more frequent and severe extreme weather events, including torrential rains, floods, typhoons and droughts.

He also called for the use of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, drones and satellite remote sensing, to support rescue and emergency operations.

Recent disasters have caused significant casualties. Flash floods triggered landslides in northwestern Gansu province killed 25 people last month, while another landslide in southwestern Chongqing left 51 people dead.

Xi said China must continue improving its ability to prevent and respond to natural disasters to protect lives and property and maintain social stability.
